Provoke was an experiemtal magazine founded in 1968 by Japanese photographers Yutaka Takanashi and Takuma Nakahira, critic Koji Taki, and writer Takahiko Okad (Daido Moriyama joined for the second issue). Three issues of Provoke were released, but it was an extremely influential publication.
Daido Moriyama
Moriyama's images have a particular rawness within them which the provoke movement often captures within itself. The black and white tones in these images really compliment eachother, allowing there to be a greater element added to the image- which Moriyama quotes in an interview.
Photographing a journey: My journey to a graveyard
Initially, my plan was to travel on the cable carts and take images at the other side of the river but I decided to go to a graveyard nearby instead as this just struck me as more unusual than an actual generic location. As I was walking, I captured everything around which I thought was well composed, and/or looked quite dingy as this adds element to an image. I then edited the images using my phone to get the desired high contrast effect. Like the photographer Daido Moriyama, I believe that making images black and white makes the image more abstract and symbolic. I personally find that colour images are a lot more basic and don't strike a buzz within me, that makes me question or wonder. As a collection, I feel that the images compliment each other as they all follow the same sort of tonal range.
