Patzsch's work is of great interest due to the realism he captured in his images, of the world around him. It is also notable that Patzsch had been involved with the 'New Objectivity' movement, which essentially disregarded any sense of idealism and blurring of the subject itself. Rather, depict things in their most simple form- as they were. The shift from 'Pictorialism' (which is almost an imitation of a painting) to 'New objectivity' was very vast after the first world war as artists wanted to capture the disasters as it were, rather than buttering up the realness of the brutal current affairs.
